Class A/B Training: 28 States and Growing

December 3, 2021

If you’re a Class A/B UST operator in just one state with a few UST sites, you may not know that each state has different operator training rules. And because each state has its own unique spin on the Federal UST requirement, each state has a different approach to how UST operators get trained.

Which is a lot of rules to keep track of.

(See related articles by Ben Thomas and Marcel Moreau in LUSTLine)

What’s required is literally all over the map and we at UST Training offer online Class A/B and C training in nearly all states that allow it. Soon we should be in all allowable states and territories.

Options, options, options

Some states:

  • Allow third party vendors (we like those ones)
  • Allow reciprocity from other states (those seem to be going away)
  • Only allow free online or live classroom training offered by the state UST agency (some are great, some are a little dry)
  • Only allow live classes (not 100% sure why with convenience of the Internet so common these days)
  • Require only a certification exam and some no test at all, just the training (can make it difficult for new operators to know what to do to follow the rules)

What makes us different

For those who have taken our training, you know it’s more than grinding through UST regulations line by line. We purposely offer not just the UST rules but easy ideas how to comply. UST operators tell us that we offer practical business advice, not just the UST rules. Plus we make sure we don’t overload you with content so the end user can easily digest what they need to know and then develop a plan on how to comply.

We take the time to explain why compliance is important for every state specific UST rule with hundreds of pictures of real-life UST sites. That extra effort takes a while to get done in each state.

We use plain terms

Sometimes state UST agency course reviewers take issue with our use of common terms to explain UST regulations, and would rather that we use what’s written in the UST rules, as if simply explaining the UST rules will magically convert into compliance.

We always take the extra time to engage you as a person with responsibilities, make you think about what all this UST management is in the first place and help you think about how they can be the best UST operator out there.

Occasionally it’s an uphill battle to get our easy-to-understand style of training approved in a state. It’s always our hope that the state reviewer can see the course through the lens of a UST operator and also a regulator.

Just right

We recently had a state inspector reviewing our course for approval say they loved some of the more exciting pictures (car stuck in a tank pit), our down-t0-earth analogies (a 0.2 GPH leak is about two Coke cans an hour) and repetition/humor (three biggest problems with ATGs: ignored alarms, ignored alarms, ignored alarms).

What’s Next?

As UST Training continues to create new Class A/B UST operator training courses, we are always circling back to our existing courses and looking for ways to improve them. Some states change rules, tweak policies, update forms and offer new technical assistance tools. We are constantly updating our course offering so you, the Class A/B or C UST operator can get the best, friendliest, most up to date course possible.
