EPA’s Semiannual UST Performance Measures Report

November 28, 2022

Here at UST Training, because we are a national service provider of Class A/B and C UST operator training, we are interested in the national perspective on underground storage tank leak prevention. Here’s the latest from the US EPA.

Dear UST Colleagues:

I am pleased to let you know that our end of fiscal year (FY) 2022 report of underground storage tank (UST) performance measures is now available. You can access the report on EPA’s website epa.gov/ust/ust-performance-measures. The report describes the continuous progress that EPA and our state, territorial, tribal, and industry partners are making in protecting public health and the environment from UST releases.

Our end of year report shows your continued commitment to the UST program and our combined ongoing success. Highlights from FY 2022 captured in the report include:

  • The UST cleanup backlog fell below 60,000 for the first time in the program’s history. Reducing the cleanup backlog continues to be a priority for the national UST program, and we anticipate the cleanup backlog will continue to decline.
  • We had fewer confirmed releases during FY 2022 than during any other fiscal year in the program’s history.
  • The number of national inspections returned to pre-COVID levels of more than 86,000.

I appreciate everyone’s efforts and contributions in achieving results for our program this past fiscal year. Thank you to everyone who provided information and conducted a quality assurance and quality control review of the numbers reported. If you have questions about our semiannual reports, please contact me or Susan Burnell ([email protected]; 202-564-0766) of my staff.

Mark Barolo, Deputy Director
Office of Underground Storage Tanks
