Close to 50 Attend Guam EPA’s Mandatory Underground Storage Tank Training

July 12, 2012

Guam- The Guam Environmental Protection Agency is hosting mandatory training for those owning or operating an underground storage tank.

About 47 participants showed up to the one day training at the Marriott Resort. Guam EPA spokesperson Tammy Jo Anderson Taft says their Hazardous Waste Management Program is in charge of regulating the 133 storage tank areas on Guam. She mentions USTs benefit the community by helping store hazardous chemicals, such as fuel or diesel. However, she says it can also be dangerous to the environment if the tanks were to leak or spill out.

“What we aim to do through this training is have anybody that deals with Underground Storage Tanks make sure that they have the proper information to respond if there is an equipment failure and to make sure the people that have these tanks know how to maintain them properly, know how to make sure that they don’t leak and they don’t harm the environment” said Taft.

The first time mandatory one day training will also occur tomorrow [Wednesday] and Thursday, July 19. The all inclusive registration fee is $150 dollars per participant.

For more information, call Guam EPA at (671) 475-1658 or log on to usttraining.com .

Why we need UST Operator Training

July 6, 2012

We received some photos from a tank tester today: This is one UST site, and the pictures were taken in one day.

If this doesn’t justify operator training…..

Get trained today. Don’t end up as one of our examples of how not to do something.

Note the wire wrapped around the shear valve, disabling the device. A trained Class A/B operator would know this is illegal and it could create a very dangerous situation if the dispenser was struck by a car.

Note the stick inserted in the drop tube. A trained Class A/B operator would know this disables the flapper and is a serious hazard,

Note the large crack in the bottom of the spill bucket: A trained Class A/B operator would know this is bad.

How NOT to install a shear valve in Texas

June 20, 2012

What’s wrong with this shear valve?

An astute tank tester sent us this photo this morning. The shear valve might work upon impact but only if the wire around the square-headed riser tube on the left side of the photo actually held… This is why we need operator training!
