The North Dakota Department of Health’s (NDDoH) Underground Storage Tank Program’s has developed a free online Operator Training course for Class A/B operators. The training is required for all facilities in North Dakota that have regulated USTs.

Michigan just joined the majority of states that now have UST operator training rules in effect. As of last week, the Michigan DEQ requires all Class A/B and C operators to get trained by August 8, 2012. That’s exactly 90 days from today! All A/B operators must become certified by taking and passing a final exam by ICC, the International Code Council.

Our online Michigan Class C course is considered acceptable in Michigan; the MI DEQ does not formally approve third party Class C trainers.

(Note from UST Training. Looks like there are some formal comments from National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) and Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers Association (SIGMA). It’ll be curious to see how these comments play out in the final version. Stay tuned for updates.)

NACS and SIGMA provided comments to the EPA with suggestions on how to limit the burden of proposed underground storage tank regulations.

UST Training wants to make sure your UST is compatible with the fuels it stores including tank, product piping and all ancillary equipment. E15, or 15% ethanol blended gasoline may pose compatibility risks.
E-15 AT RETAIL: NEW REPORT PUBLISHED BY API.

FRIDAY, May 4, 2012 – The American Petroleum Institute (API) has released its E15 infrastructure impact analysis that summarizes the ten E15 compatibility studies that have been issued to date. As a conclusion, API states, “Retailers choosing to sell E15 are required by OSHA and fire codes to use listed equipment, and EPA rules require that equipment be proven compatible with E15. The result is that very few sites will be able to sell E15 fuel with existing equipment. Equipment modifications could be as little as new hanging hardware (i.e., hose, nozzle, etc.) or as much as an entirely new fuel dispensing system. Additionally, selling E15 may increase the risk for staff and customer safety, and present environmental consequences. The possibility of customer misfueling and the adverse effects of E15 on vehicle engines are also issues that should be considered. The only alternative is to not store E15 at the facility.” Here is a link to API’s press statement.

The US EPA periodically publishes a list of states and how well they are achieving significant operational compliance, or SOC. In other words, what percent of all the tanks in each state are in compliance with release detection, spill/overfill prevention and corrosion protection requirements.
