COVID-19 “Flattening the Curve” & Protecting Yourself and Family – Summary
Source: Dr. Dave Price, Weill Cornell Medical Center, NYC – (video link below)
Social Distancing – You get COVID-19 from sustained contact with someone who has the disease (experiencing fever and aches) or someone who is about to get the disease…someone who in the next one to two days is going to develop symptoms of the disease. This is why social distancing is so important. Read on, there’s more to this.
Transmission of the DiseaseAlmost exclusively you transmit the virus from your hands to your face! It enters through your eyes, your nose or your mouth. Aerosolization, getting it through the air, occurs primarily with long, sustained, contact with someone…thought to be over 10-15 minutes of sustained contact in an unprotected environment..i.e. no mask or PPE. The overwhelming number contracting the disease are getting it from touching sick individuals or things they have touched and then touching their face.
Statement of Fact – COVID-19 is in your community…bar none! Reported cases or not, it is in your community. This is not to scare. Rather it is to empower you to protect.

Rules of Protection – Estimated at 99% Prevention of Getting the Disease
  • Carry Hand Sanitizer with you at all times – It is known that if you keep your hands clean, you will likely not get the virus. If you touch a door, okay but sanitize after. Touch a grocery cart, okay but sanitize after…or sanitize before AND after. Sanitize routinely.
  • We must psychologically be working on the connection between your hands and your face – Humans subconsciously touch their faces hundreds of times each day. Think about it. We constantly scratch noses, wipe foreheads, rub chins and dozens of other actions…without thinking or hesitation. So, it you touch an unknowing sick person or a counter that has been touched by a sick person, shake the hand of someone that shook the hand of a sick person and then touch your face…that is predominantly how you get the disease. To protect yourselves, we must stop touching our faces without first sanitizing our hands. Wearing a mask (surgical, homemade or bandana) helps….not to keep you from aerosolized spray (remembering how unlikely it is that unsustained, incidental contact will contaminate you), but to keep you from touching your face.
  • Distance yourselves from others…especially touching or sustained closeness without protection. Maintain the 6 foot recommended distance whenever possible.
People can go outside for walks, go to the store to shop when needed….just follow the three rules above. The source of this information is Dr. Dave Price, ER doctor at Weill Cornell Medical Center in ground zero New York City. His video also covers other protections for families, what to do if you or a family member gets sick, and other important information. Watch this empowering video at https://vimeo.com/399733860.
I am offering the above because this ground zero doctor’s findings are not being widely distributed. The hand sanitizing practice is being promoted but not the importance of NOT touching your face…ever, without first sanitizing your hands. Be well.
