I was driving back from eastern Oregon last week when I spied a sign on the interstate that said “Teapot Dome Service Station Historic site” at the Zillah, Washington exit and decided to investigate. Over the years I’ve seen pictures of a old time tea pot shaped service station and was thrilled when I drove though the sleepy wine country berg of Zillah to find that yes indeed, it was the very one.
What I learned is that the old gas station has a strange, rich and scandalous history. Even though the tanks are long gone and no certified operator is required (it’s a gift shop moved a mile from its original location), it’s a great roadside icon to the good old days of service station yesteryear.
Happy Holidays from all of us at UST Training!
