Hi, this is Ben Thomas with UST training, and this is a tank savvy minute. Today we’re going to talk about a device called the shear valve. Some people call it the crash valve, fire valve, earthquake valve it’s this little guy right here and as the piping comes from the underground tank up into the dispenser there’s a device here with a little trip arm and if this dispenser were to be struck by a car or heaven forbid catch on fire this arm would snap the trap door would slam shut and if the line was under pressure the fuel would not come gushing out onto the island and so this is an important safety device it’s required by our fire officials must be in place for all pressurized line must be securely anchored and it must be tested annually to make sure it actually functions properly in the way it should. Shear valves critical part of a UST system. This is Ben Thomas with UST training, and this has been a tank savvy minute.
