Tank Savvy Minute in Saipan: Ball Floats and Flex Piping

July 19, 2012

Hi, this is Ben Thomas with UST training this is a tank savvy minute. We’re standing out at a live UST facility here in Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands we’re doing an operator training class. I’m noticing a couple things about this site, first off there is a ball float valve sitting in the submersible turbine pump containment sump. The ball float will rise as the fuel level rises it will seal the vent, and it’ll plug that. Ball flow files are kind of common here in Saipan we’re trying to encourage operators to remove them and place them with a flapper valve. Another thing I’m noticing here there’s a fair amount of this flexible plastic piping that is the double wall interstitial piping for this particular UST. Now we know that some of this containment piping has had problems in the past. This pipe is actually looking pretty good, so the operators here just need to know that they need to monitor this pipe and to make sure it’s not showing any signs of wear and tear. This is Ben Thomas sweating at a gas station at Saipan at the Commonwealth of the northern Marian Islands this is has been a tank savvy minute.
