Tank Savvy Minute: Mechanical Line Leak Detectors

January 5, 2013

Hi, this is Ben Thomas with UST training, this is a tank savvy minute. We’re here in Las Vegas at the petroleum equipment Institute trade show learning about some technology you may not be aware of. Mechanical line leak detector positive pump shutdown there’s only one make a model out there like that and here to talk about today is Greg Young of VMI. Greg, please tell us about this cool technology. Well, this equipment is totally retrofittable with existing LD2000 mechanical line Leak Detectors and what we do is we install a switch in the top of the leak detector that when the leak detector is open the Piston is in contact with the switch and literally closes the switch telling us pressure is high. When pressure falls the switch goes open it, communicates to us line pressure has fallen. Is it a line leak? Is it thermal contraction? We don’t know let’s test find out and shut the submersible off if there is a problem. That’s awesome so as you may know mechanical line leak detectors traditionally have only ever restricted the flow and alerted the operator kind of indirectly so here, we are, the technology gives us positive pump shutdown in a catastrophic event. Greg thanks so much. Thank you. This is Ben Thomas with UST training this has been a tank savvy minute.
