Fires at gas stations are rare, when you consider the large number of UST sites and the number of people who fill up every day. Proper signage, on-site safety equipment, alert UST operators and a smarter public all help to keep disaster away from most fueling operations.

Nevada DEP Petroleum Fund Grant Program for UST Upgrades

Good News Nevada UST Operators!

The State of Nevada has a grant program for financial relief for qualified Class A/B UST operators who upgrade their UST systems. Effective last fall, the Nevada UST rules now require all UST owners and operators to do periodic testing of spill buckets and containment sumps. The cost to upgrade or replace failed equipment may be significant and prohibitive for a small business UST owner or operator.

Colorado Offers Financial Incentives to Upgrade UST Systems

Good News in Colorado for those Class A/B UST operators who upgraded their UST system. The UST Program can authorize money from the Petroleum Storage Tank Fund (Fund) to be used as incentives to underground or aboveground storage tank owners and operators for significant operational compliance or to upgrade existing tank systems.

To be eligible for this incentive the applicant must have completed the upgrade or tank removal work by December 31, 2018.

New Colorado Rules About UST Service Work

According to the Colorado Division of Oil and Public Safety, people who do maintenance or repair on UST systems must soon be state-certified and will be called Qualified Service Technicians.

Effective January 1, 2020, the majority of work performed on UST systems in Colorado must be conducted by a state-certified Qualified Service Technician. Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Installation, repair, replacement, maintenance, and calibration of all UST leak detection monitoring equipment.
  • Repair or maintenance work on in use UST systems, including replacement of components such as spill buckets, overfill prevention devices, and ancillary piping components such as flex connectors and penetration fittings located within sumps and under-dispenser containment.
  • Annual monitoring system functionality testing and certification.
  • Secondary containment testing, including initial testing of newly installed secondary containment systems.
