The Making of a Tank Savvy Minute

Notes from the field…

Making a one-minute training video at a real live gas station sounds easy but there’s plenty that can and usually does go wrong in the field when the camera starts to roll. Our Tank Savvy videos are shot on location to give each clip the “this is totally real” feeling. However, lighting, ambient noise, discovering wrong or broken equipment, busy foot and car traffic, loud c-store customers, and the periodic unexpected surprise all makes for very fluid working conditions.

I’ve had deer walk into the shoot, loud traffic from an unloading ferry whiz by, merry drinkers shouts obscenities, a Harley fire up and take off, dogs bark, and homeless man almost ram me with his laden shopping cart.

Recent we shot a series of Tank Savvy Minutes at a very busy gas station in downtown Portland, Oregon. Andrew Knapp and Loren Swalheim of Franklin Fueling Systems approached me at the PEI show in Chicago and the plot was hatched to shoot a series of videos about the Franklin EVO 550.

The fun part about shooting training video is scripting something that is original, helpful and maybe a little playful. Andrew and Ryan fly out, met me and my Portland friend Nick the cameraman, then we spent about a half hour getting me familiar with the EVO 550. Here’s one video from the shoot. More to come soon.

Eight Methods to Motivate UST Operators

Here’s an oldie from the vault: I recently came across a copy of 2004 LUSTLine article: “I Don’t Train, I Enforce!”

I wrote about how to change behaviors in the UST world, giving state UST agencies ideas how to both inspire good behavior and discourage bad behavior using ideas from “Click” trainer Karen Pryor. The article received equal amounts of scorn and praise.

Clicking for Oil: The Tale of the Fuel Storage Tank Inspector

What do you think? Can these tools be used for UST compliance? Comments welcome.

What does a suspected release mean? Lessons from a recent UST explosion

Recently in Chicago, a suspected leaky UST system caused fugitive fuel vapors to travel over a mile through a city sewer line and catch fire, causing injury and damage. See the news clip here.

Our friends at Canary Compliance wrote a thoughtful blog post about the importance of alarm response and how remote alarm monitoring can help reduce missing critical alarms.

New Jersey UST Operator Training- Last But Not Least…

The Good News: The last state in the nation — New Jersey — is about to adopt UST operator training rules, along with the rest of the 2015 EPA UST amendments.

The Bad News: For Class A/B operators, New Jersey will only allow the use of specific live Class A/B Training and an ICC certification exam. UST Training won’t be able to offer online training to Class A/B operators.
